Jai Hind and Pakistan Zindabad!

Pakistan and India celebrate their Independence Day on 14th and 15th of August respectively. In 1947, these two states won their freedom from the British occupation after countless sacrifices and untiring efforts.

Our generation can probably never know what freedom is since they have never undergone the reverse circumstances. May be the people of Afghanistan and Iraq can better tell the worth of independence. However, all we know is that our forefathers made immense sacrifices to win these lands to secure our rights and identities. Today we owe these homelands to the blood of the martyrs who gave in their lives to secure the generations to follow.

As we celebrate the freedom of Pakistan and India, we must look forward to make peace between our nations. There are those who would always keep rubbing the incidents of independence and promote ill feelings among people who were not even a part of the havoc at that time. Each side has its own version of the story and the only way for us to move towards a happy and healthy sub-continent is to view each other as human first of all before Pakistanis or Indians. The blood on both sides of the border is as sacred and holy. The children on the other side of the border are as innocent and pure. What we practice today will be reflected in our generations to follow.

Jai Hind and Pakistan Zindabad!

Today, let us put aside the political elements and embrace each other and celebrate our freedom. No faith is greater than humanity so let us practice that and profess the same to our children. Indians and Pakistanis are a part of each other as they were always. I remember my grandmother telling me stories when we lived like brothers and sisters. Much hatred and ill feelings were injected among us by political and religious bodies who exploited the innocent people for their own benefit.

Let us free our hearts of what was never in there and dance to the beat of freedom together…

JAI HIND and PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!!!

Fariha, You have voiced many of my feelings in your post. I love the people of Pakistan because we come from the same stock. We are brothers and sisters. That does not mean that I love Pakistan.
I hope someday, the border between our two country vanishes like the Berlin wall and we become one again like east and west Germany.
You have a large heart and an open mind. You are a world citizen. We need more and more people like you on both sides of the border.

All the land is Allah’s, all the people are His... i personally dont believe in geographical or religious boundaries. All mankind is one and only thing that is detestable is feelings of hatred, evil and falsehood.

Fariha,

There is one question that has been bothering me. If you don’t mind, could you shed some light on this:

Pakistan was part of India before she gained independence. India became independent on August 15, 1947. How did Pakistan win her independence before India?

Sorry Fariha, I have this bad habit of thinking too much. I hope you don’t mind this. I am asking you this question because I consider you to be a good friend and also because I have not been able to find a logical answer to this question.

Both Pakistan and India were parts of British Indian Empire. The area that came to be called Pakistan gained independence a day before the remaining portion of the empire, which chose to retain the name India.

Great to see someone cheering for both countries in the same breath. We need to put old flames out and work for the future. Pakistan needs to stop being paranoid about Indian not wanting it as a country and start working towards normalisation. Lets all of us do the same.

Brilliant blog! I am so impressed. I mean, at the end of the day we are all human beings and must learn to forgive and forget. Every time we revolt against unnecessary things not only does the other party suffer but we do too. Instead of keeping the hatred in mind, if we could just move on with our lives, the world would be a better place.

The simplest reason which comes to mind is that since the then viceroy Lord Mountbatten had to attend the Independence day ceremonies of both countries in their capitals (to ceremoniously hand over Independence;raising the crescent and star or the Indian tri-color & pulling down the Union Jack etc etc ),it couldn’t be done on the same day for both.Nehru’s astrologers told him 15 Aug was an auspacious day so he went for it.Freedom was actually at mid-night -and so Pakistan had the ceremonies on the 14th.... Nice guess..Eh?

Fariha, I was in Lahore, for three days, and then also got time to tour other parts of Pakistan, as part of a delegation of journalists from J&K.
I enjoyed the hospitality of my hosts, and since I speak Punjabi, I believe it got me a special treatment too!
There is an information deficit, on both sides, about one another.
That means we will continue to have difficulties ... in reaching out to one another.

Gee all I want for both our great nations is that our dumb ass politicians get some sense knocked into their heads and they realize that killing each other and creating miseries for another will never bring prosperity to either!!!

First of all, we need to stop wishing for a united India... Pakistan grew up as a separate nation and we need to respect that...

Sure we have a lot in common but some of our sensibilities still differ and that really doesn’t have to be the end of the road for us!!!

I wish same time next year we have free access to each other’s countries because the barriers will just not break unless we are allowed to mingle!!

For once I’d like to be able to visit Pakistan without my parents worrying about if I’ll come back alive or not...

Sorry to burst the romantic bubble here but the country is still not very safe and that’s something the rulers of the country need to address ASAP because in our heart of hearts, we still want to know what that magical place looks and feels like!!!

P.S. while we’re out fantasizing, can we have like a join Independence Day celebration??? Like a huge midnight ball at Wagha with a concert featuring best performers from both the sides????

Thanks Asmita! I would love to join if some party can be organizaed on Wagha... but u see there are always those who never want anyone to live in peace!!! I dunno why ple want to instill hatred and rejoice in that???? I mean wat do they got out of it???

Our rulers are lost in their own power game and are least bothered abt wat to do for the citizens or for the neighbors for the least. We need some kind of revolution here to wake up these politicians and let us live in peace!!!!

You come over to Lahore, i will take you around in my own custody... if i survive, you will survive for sure too ;) LOL

Qaid-e-Azam M.A. Zinnah did not invite Lord Mountbatten for the Ceremony in Pakistan. He would have none of it (the British) after transfer of power. It was only Indians who requested the Viceroy to become the first Governor General of independent india.

For details like choice of dates and other events, please read ”Freedon at Midnight”.

Flags are not hoisted during night.
