“Teacher , What is the Meaning of a Terr-or-ist?”

It was a day at school just like all others. I went in my class and sat at my place when I noticed the seat next to me was vacant. I thought my friend was absent, but then I realized he was sitting in the other row. When I signaled him to come and sit with me, he threw a ball of trampled piece of paper which hit in my face. I picked it and straightened it. It said, “They are terr-or-ists (I couldn’t spell the word properly), they want to kill us.” He was starring hard at me...

The following day during lunch break, I was sitting on the stairs and having my lunch when 4 boys came up to me. They said the ’F’ word to me (my mom had told me not to use it). “What is it?” I asked the boys as they surrounded me. One of them held me by the collar saying, “You are a Muslim terr-or-ist!” I did not know this word “terr-or-ist” although I was familiar with the word Muslim. “What terr-or- rist?” Another one kicked me hard between my legs… I cannot really recall what happened next… just a few voices “they are terr-or-ist, kick them outta here…they wanna kill us…”

On my way back home, I felt… I do not know… may be scared but I remember I remained silent all day. I thought of telling mom what had happened but then I could not. The next morning when I got into the school bus… it had never happened before… I felt that everyone in the bus was staring at me… a stare which had accelerated my heartbeat and I couldn’t breathe properly.

It had been more than a week that my friends were not talking to me… they said you are a Muslim and Muslims are terr-or-ists. Muslim? Yes, my mom had told me that I was a Muslim… I accompanied my father to the mosque sometime… and my mom had told me to speak the truth and never steal, Muslims should not do so… that’s all I knew. I had no clue as to what was happening. Whatever it was, it scared me, it scared me so much that I could hardly talk or smile. And I was lonely… lonely and scared. A week passed like that and this word terr-or-ist kept ringing in my head. What did it mean? What’s so bad with this word? Why they calling me a terr-or-ist? I had been in this school for 5 years… it had never happened before… I never heard this word before… at least I should know what it means…

I gathered all my courage at last and went up to Mrs. Bobette. She was the one who would always answer children’s questions… she often smiled and hugged kids… she was wise and loving everyone said. “Teacher… what is the meaning of… of a terr-or-ist?” My voice was shaking and I felt this heavy lump in my throat. She turned to me and looked in my eyes… she kept staring at me. Then, as if she read through what was happening inside me, what had happened to me… she smiled and hugged me, she hugged me till I regained what I had lost. “It is nothing dear… nothing to do with you.”

It is indecent to judge anyone based on their religion, race, colour, sexuality, preferred celebrity..

When is all this going to end?

This was a great story! It always seems to hit harder when the reader is put in the ”other” perspective. I wanted to cry when the teacher hugged the kid! Sometimes I just wish people were either blind or at least color blind. Racism is not fun for anyone to go through!

WE NEED MORE MRS. BOBETTE’S IN THE WORLD!!!

Thank you for sharing this!

This is a haunting piece, Fariha. It leaves a nagging feeling that there really is something amiss in humanity.

I wanted to comment earlier but Instablogs went on the blink again from my end. It’s still not working properly but I can now manage to send comments somehow.

Islamophobia is a rather new nomenclature of racism. It manages to combine more than one nasty attitude towards fellowmen.

It was completely designed by the West, propagated, and constantly fed by the blitzkrieg pace of press releases on the so-called War on Terror.

Islamophobia is a crafty PR package, and also one of the most evil designs of propaganda.

But, like they say in PR, a campaign is only as good as it’s time, and will have a limited shelf life of it own.

You move me my dear.

Excellent is the word. And would just like to reiterate what Grace said-

”Islamophobia is a rather new nomenclature of racism. It manages to combine more than one nasty attitude towards fellowmen.

The lump in my throat stopped me...wish I could hug the child...let him know and feel that he is good and complete.

The story clearly and poignantly brought out that which is at the core of the injustices arising from ’present’ ’clash of civilisations’(though, neither is it present, nor is it between civilasations)

Very touching Fariha. Its a matter of twisted irony of fate that most terrorist activities of the recent past has a link to some Muslims or Muslim organizations. Its always the innocent and the good people of any community who suffer the most...

Thanks for your appreciation Reshmi.

U know these things actually happened... Muslims in general and those with a name tag of ”Osama” or ”Muhammad” get extra special treatment...

Another interesting post, Fariha.
Unfortunately all muslims have to pay for the deeds of few.
Terrorism has nothing to do with religion. I hope people understand this simple truth.

Cannot agree with you more Fariha. Maybe people have become very intolerant, or maybe the amount of stress has increased in the World. Maybe people need to blame someone for all their problems ... i don’t know

Sorry for poking my nose in, but it is not quite that bad. I can understand that because of the information invasion and more empowerment to individuals like us, it may seems that way. But if we look back it has always been quite bad. If anything, things have improved, at least in terms of the spread of positive and productive values.

But,yes, things are sad. And ,specially, if you are the one facing it then it is quite something. Even the end of the world.

According to our religious belief (Hinduism), we are in the ”age of Kali” (Kali Yuga) or ”age of vice”.

This is supposed to be the time of evil, the dark age...the time when people do wrong things, think of wrong as right, and degenerate spiritually...

I am not a religious person myself, but what I do see around me makes me believe yes, we won’t last too long if we continue the way we are living. Killing in name of religion, destroying our ecosystem, misplaced priorities, low morals, values etc...
It sure looks like everything around us is wrong we may not last too long.. :(

Yes abheshak but it hasnt been THIS bad i think... like that verse:

”Ye wafa un dinoun ke baat hai, jab log sachay or makan kachey hua kartey thay...”

(I hope u understand urdu.)

Modern world is a complete chaos...

Perhaps the chaos is more in the mind and with this information explosion it is harder to deal with. What say?

hi Abheshak, now its my turn to poke in :)

I do agree with Fariha that our world is a complete chaos and its not just a chaotic feeling due to information we have access to.
Yes, steps are being taken in right direction, but its too little and too late.
I am not a prophet of doom and neither do I believe we will end to exist anytime soon, but yes, the world we live in today has degenerated in all respect and I think its getting worse.

There are many hundreds out there who can see their self-confidence being trampled everyday in front of their eyes in the name of raciscm and can’t even help it. sad, very sad! Hope there is some permanent solution out there for this!

It was the flowing beard of a Sardar where I looked for divinity in my childhood. It was the Maulvi of the nearby Masjid who used to come out after saying Namaz every friday evening prayers to the waiting mothers with small unwell children in their laps for His blessings through the bearded man. The Maulvi used to recite something in Arabic ending with Bismillah-e-Rahman-e_rahim, bless the children irrespective of caste, creed or religion and the neighbourhood was happy.

It all changed during the eighties. Insurgency as known to us from 1938 onwards existed in Nagaland.

The insurgency of Punjab rose to demand separate Khalistan and Indira Gandhi was murdered by her own security guard, a Sardar (Sikh). Sardars were no more trusted. We started distrusting the simple, hardworking peasant community of Sikhs. The flowing beard lost its sanctity.

Abduction of Rubaiya Sayeed daughter of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, the then Home Minister of India in Janata Government of V.P. Singh, now ex-CM of Jammu and Kashmir, and sister of Mehbooba Mufti, the P.D.P. President;. changed the face of insurgency in Kasmir. A spate of serial blasts across Bombay and other cities brought the terrorist home.

How-so-ever fake or simulated the attack on World Trade Centre was; Americans woke up to the new threat of Islamic terrorism. Till then, they knew only Israel. It is thanks to them, that the menace has come to limelight.

Agreed, that all children are innocents; majority are peaceful and they are more concerned about their next meal. But then, that is the ideal ground where terorism breeds.

I congratulate you on this beautiful article which brings the humane face of the challenges we are upto, Bravo.

What we see is the result of our past deeds.

One who learns and acts accordingly will definitely get a better life next time.

One who do not will also get a life but much more difficult then the present.

This is the law of nature. Understood by very few people.

Thanks Dr. Ratan,

I always learn from your wisdom. However, my personal belief is that whatever we go through is either a test or a punishment in this life alone....

If we are innocent and encounter something bad, it is a test; if we are bad and encounter a problem, its a punishment.

Those who preserve and remain patient in trial are the ones truly loved by God. Still i think this subject of punishment and test is very complex and i think these verse of the Quran can explain it the best:

”Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.”

I love this one and i have learnt so much from this!

God knows the best.

Wow, this is such a moving post Fariha! I don’t understand why kids or anyone for that matter needs to be a victim of such an ignominy. Some people love to disrupt peace and they would go to any extent to achieve that. Why can’t people understand that terrorism is not a Muslim monopoly! This post echoes the plight of so many helpless kids. I sincerely wish that these things start changing.
