The Vision of Pakistan

The dream of Pakistan, a separate homeland for the Muslims, was first envisioned by Allama Iqbal. Sir Muhammad Iqbal (1877 - 1938) was a Muslim poet, Sufi, philosopher and politician born in Sialkot, British India. His poetry in Urdu and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era. His vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India was to
inspire the creation of Pakistan.

After studying in England and Germany, Iqbal established a law practice, but concentrated primarily on writing scholarly works on politics, economics, history, philosophy and religion. Iqbal was a strong proponent of the political and spiritual revival of Islamic civilisation across the world, but specifically in India; a series of famous lectures he delivered to this effect were published as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. He has inspired Muslims with the realization of life and urged them for self-reform and self-actualization by searching for their khudi or self.

Your prayer cannot change the Order of the Universe,
But it is possible that praying will alter your being;
If there is a revolution in your inner Self
It will not be strange, then, if the whole world changes too

Social and Political Aspect of Islam

He is known as The Thinker of Pakistan, The Poet of the East, The Sage of Ummah. In his speech, Iqbal emphasized that unlike Christianity, Islam came with “legal concepts” with “civic significance,” with its “religious ideals” considered as inseparable from social order:

“therefore, the construction of a policy on national lines, if it means a displacement of the Islamic principle of solidarity, is simply unthinkable to a Muslim.”

Rumi And Iqbal

Maulana Rumi and Iqbal communicated a shared message “learn to see and think in a new way.” As Suroosh Irfani writes:

“this message sums up an outlook of life as a forward assimilative movement, even as one remains rooted in an Islamic heritage. Indeed, the message arose in a historical context when old certainties were crumbling and the new were struggling to be born: Rumi lived at a time when the Muslim world was traumatised by Mongol invasions, while Iqbal’s was a time of awakening of the colonised masses that eventually led to the independence of India and Pakistan.”

The political system in Islam

a.Sovereignty of Allah which means supremacy of Shariah (Quran and Sunnah). The basic law of the state shall be based on the Quran and the Sunnah.
b.Government established by the free choice of the people.
c.Fundamental rights: All citizens should have human rights irrespective of gender or creed. The Islamic Constitutions of the world have a chapter on the Fundamental rights or Rights of the people which are available to all the citizens in the state.
d.Rule of Law and Independence of Judiciary are important points of Islamic political system.
e.Shura or consultation with the people and among the persons in the Government through various forum including Parliament is an important element in Islamic political theory.

Khilafat establishes the authority of Allah on earth, and the Khalifa (ruler) strives to uphold that authority within the community of followers. For the believers, Khilafat is an embodiment of Allah’s Unity, as they choose to take divine authority through the person of the Khalifa. The believers partake of the blessings of Khilafat by holding firm to their faith and practices, united under him.

The vision of Iqbal does come to life in the form of Pakistan, but by separating the Islamic social elements from government and politics, this country has lost the vision of its founders.

Dont forget Iqbal also wrote songs devoted to integration and secularism of India.How he changed his views like M.A.Jinnah is a mystery.Most of the modern peoples in south Asia still beleives in secularism.

Thanks for visiting Vijay. Yes he wrote poems for India for he was definitely an Indian and loved his country. He didnt detest any country for that matter. It is usually said that after his extensive tours of the west and his deep study of Islam, philosophy and sufism changed his outlook in the later stage. Then, he wrote to uplift the lost spirit of the Muslims.

Other than this, he was a sufi and has written extensively about the purification of the self which he named as ’KHUDI’.

Vijay,
Sadly the people of both Bharat and Pakistan will remain ignorant of the real history as long as they don’t start thinking for themselves and depend on politicians for their views.

Why Iqbal or for that matter even Jinnah changed their views is no mystery.It happened because Nehru and the Congress would not agree to a the Muslim demand for a separate electorate and fixed no of seats as per ratio of their population in the Indian upper and lower Houses for Muslims.

It was that simple.And you know why Congress did not accept this simple solution of giving the Muslims the rights they demanded for the sake of keeping India united? Because with such a large majority of Muslims in India how could they dominate the politics of post independence as they did for almost 30 years!

Exactly the same think our politicians did with East Pakistani voters -will led to the division of Pakistan.

Your politicians are so stupid ,they couldn’t even select the right name for their country! See my article on the misnaming of India.

Hehehe... who is madam Grace?

Well as far as Iqbal is concerned, he was a genious, a philosopher, a sufi... his vision brought Pakistan to a reality but unfortnately, it did not take the form of an ideal modern Islamic which he dreamt of as he was a fully modern man...

Having a separate state does not mean that we or he hate India or any other country, it simply means that we wud live our way and practice our values on individual and social level :)

True Dr. Ratan.

If only our rulers had not be selfish and had established the authority of God here, this land would have been a paradise on earth.

Muslim World lived a wonderful age when Supremacy belonged to God and the rulers acted like His representatives on earth, not gods themselves!

Sure. i also love this tarana:

sāre jahān se acchā hindostān hamārā
ham bulbulain hai is ki, yeh gulsitān hamārā

ghurbat men hon agar ham, rahta hai dil vatan men
samjho vahīn hamen bhī, dil hain jahān hamārā

parbat voh sab se ūnchā, hamsāya āsmān ka
voh santari hamārā, voh pāsbān hamārā

godi men kheltī hain is ki hazāron nadiyā
gulshan hai jin ke dam se, rashk-e-janān hamārā

aye āb, raud, ganga, voh din hen yād tujhko
utarā tere kināre, jab kārvān hamārā

maz’hab nahīn sikhātā āpas men bayr rakhnā

Translation

Better than the entire world, is our Hindustan;
we are its nightingales of mirth, and it is our garden abode

Though in foreign lands we may reside, with our homeland our hearts abide,
Regard us also to be there, where exist our hearts

That mountain most high, neighbor to the skies;
it is our sentinel; it is our protector

In the lap of whose, play thousands of rivers;
gardens they sustain; the envy-of-the-heavens of ours

O waters of the Ganga mighty, do you recall the day
when on your banks, did land the caravan of ours

Religion does not teach us to harbour grudges between us
Indians we all are; India, our motherland

While Greece, Egypt , Rome have all been wiped out
till now yet remains, this civilization of ours {it has stood the test of time}

Something there is that keeps us,our entity from being eroded
For ages has been our enemy, the way of the world

Iqbal! Is there no soul that could
understand the pain in thy heart?

Yes,boundries cannot describe and cant change the past.Its old very very old and yes you are right Buddhism also flourished there,but i’m talking about preserving history,which you can say ’Saajha Viraasat’.there is so much common between these two countries.even the music and dance culture.When people here see performing Pakistani artist here,they feel Apnapan.

Yes thats right Vijay. We do feel the same when we listen to indian songs or watch hindi movies. This is because we lived together for ages.... my social norms are still same.

However, there are certain distinctions and sure muslims living in India folow and practice Islam fine; the vision of Pakistan as i mentioned in the article was to establish the soverniety of God. And had it been established, there wundt have been any crime, rapes, poverty, corruption, unemployment and chaos here!

The vision of an Islamic State means that the entire land will be ruled according to the pattern as told to us by God Himself. Ofcourse the laws of Allah can no where meet the laws of man. The primary factor is that, only if the rulers take it as a trust of God, 90% issues will be solved. That the concept of ’Ameer’ or ruler in Islam.

I think may be it is so because most of his work is in Urdu and persian. BUt sure he is a great inspiration of even the non-Muslims and is greatly read in the west.

His philosophy of ”khudi” or ”self” is a true inspiration of anyone who wants to attain self purifictaion and God. He says :

”Khudi ko kar buland itna kay her taqdeer sey pehlay,

Khuda bandy sey khud pochay, bata tere raza kya hai.”

(Elevate, or purify your ”self” so much that even God would ask for your consent before making any decsion of your fate!)

Well vijay i think our rulers are but our own reflection! YOu see we ple are corrupt in our personal lives, we dont take care of our parents, our duties, our means of livlihood are impure, we are not honest, we lie, we backbite, we dont give due rights of our servants and employees .....

I mean since our ruler is one of us, he only reflects the general degeneration and corrptuion of our society! When every individual will mend his ways, our rulers will also become honest and God fearing!

Farhia,

A beautiful concept- but one which Muslims have found it impossible to practice in any age.

And I am sorry but the dream of Pakistan was first envisioned not by our great philosopher poet Iqbal - but by Ch. Rehmat Ali whi in 1933 published a pamphlet, ’Now or Never’, coining the word Pakistan for the first time.

Thanks for your input Hassan.

”Iqbal encouraged the creation of a ”state in northwestern India for Indian Muslims” in his 1930 address.” Ch, Rehmat Ali was involved in coining the name. This is what has come to my knowledge :)

Pakistan was formed as result of Islamic fanaticism, its fanaticism on which u strive and it will be fanaticism for which u’ll be doomed! If it wasn’t for religious fanaticism Pakistan would never evacuate 30 percent of it’s Hindu population either by butchering them or making them flee for their lives! Pakistan-India-Bangladesh is artificial split and true sons of this soil WILL restore the original HINDU RASHTRA one day even if it’s done in name of some Arabic god!

On 28 January 1933 Chaudhary Rahmat Ali published a pamphlet called ”Now or Never” in England propagating the idea of a separate homeland for Indian Muslims of the subcontinent and named it ”Pakistan”.

Dear Mr. Ramesh,

The soul of Iqbal is not giving me any commission to spread this information.... I already mentioned that the name ’Pakistan’ was suggested by Rehmat Ali but the vision was Iqbal’s. Anyhow, its not as grave an issue so no problem :)
