Why ISLAM?
The most widely held question by the contemporary non-Muslim world is as to what is there so unique about Islam in particular when all the religions teach us to do good deeds and shun evil. Everyone for sure agrees that all the great religions including Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Islam provide a fair distinction between right and wrong, good and evil. Lying, stealing, raping, killing all are considered prohibited in these religions. Then why do these Muslims go on and on about Islam? Is there any practical logic behind it?

If only by preaching the dos and don’ts evil could be stopped then there is for sure no need of Islam; we can all follow our own beliefs and faith. But the question is that why the results are not coming if this is the case? We all know what is right and wrong yet the society continues to degenerate and crime and evil is unstoppable. This is where Islam differs from other faiths…
The Fundamental difference between Islam and other religions
All faiths profess righteousness and shun evil, but the unique trait of Islam is that it guides people as how to practically achieve peace and righteousness and how to avert evil on individual as well as social level. Islam is called the “Natural Religion of Man” since its beliefs and philosophies are based upon human nature and are prescribed by God Himself. Who would know the nature of man except for the One who created him? Let us consider some major issues that our world is facing today: poverty, robberies and rape.

Solution for Poverty and Robberies
Like all religions, Islam also condemns thefts and robberies… what is the difference then, huh? The diversity is that along with telling us not to rob, Islam also provides a method to put an end to it. It prescribes the system of Zakaat, which is obligatory annual charity. Every person who has a saving that exceeds the nisaab level i.e. more than 85 grams of gold, should give 2.5% of that saving yearly in charity. The principal cause of robberies and thefts is poverty. If everyone would give 2.5% of his savings, poverty would for sure end in the world. Then, Islam prescribes the law of chopping off the hands of the robber. You would scream out, “WHAT? Chopping off someone’s hand! It is indeed a barbaric and brutal religion!” But let us suppose if we implement this law in any country where the crime rate is skyscraping, will the rate of crime and theft increase or decrease. If every citizen would give 2.5% of his savings, will poverty increase or decrease? Sure nobody would like to see thousands of people without hand! But the truth is that when we implement this law, the rate of thefts will decline automatically as nobody would like to take the risk of this level. The thought of the penalty would scare the hell of the robber and he would in most cases refrain from it. Alongside, when you give out 2.5% your savings to the needy, nobody will need to rob to begin with. Hence, hardly anyone will have to undergo this punishment.

Solution for Rape
According to almost all religions, rape is considered a serious offense. Islam has the same stance. The difference between Islam and other religious in this respect is that along with prohibiting rape it also provides a solution to put an end to this heinous act. It has the system of hijab for both men and women, “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them.” Hijab for women includes covering their complete body except for the hands, feet and face along with lowering their lowering their gaze. The reason this hijab has been prescribed is to protect the women from molestation.

Then Islam prescribes capital punishment for rapist. You would say “What! Such a ruthless punishment! It is surely not practical in this modern age!” But if you would ask anyone that if someone rapes your wife, sister or mother, how would you like to punish him? Most people will say, “We will KILL him!” But when Islam professes the same, we call it barbaric! Double standards, huh?

Islam as the Only Solution for Mankind
Had “man-made” laws been effective and result-oriented, the most developed countries like United States would not have the highest rate of crimes and rape. Ask yourselves, if we would implement Islamic laws in the world, will rapes increase or decrease? Will crime increase or decrease? Islam not only tells us “what to do” but “how to do” as well. Owing to such individual and social solutions, Islam has become the fastest growing faith in the world. (An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by 47%)

This myth that “Islam steals people’s freedom” is bogus. What seems to be lack of freedom is in fact meant for the benefit of individuals and society as a whole. It is just like the example of wearing a seat belt while driving and some would refuse to do so saying, “No! This is stealing my freedom...” Similarly, if humans are set all free, there are more chances of this world becoming a jungle than a civilized place. The restrictions are meant for our safety just as wearing a seat belt while driving minimizes the chance of accident. Islam minimizes the chances of personal and social evils by these restrictions.

If you think there is any other faith or philosophy that can solve the problems of mankind practically, I would love to hear.

Thanks a bunch Bobette!

The truth in fact is that Christanity, Hinduism, and Islam and all the prophets that came were sent by God and taught one religion and way of life...

Whatever titles were given to religions were given infact one and the same. People later made changes in their religious books according to their own understanding. The only difference is that Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him)) came as a seal of Prophets and Islam came at the end to tell the complete code of life for generations to come till doomsday. All other prophets must be true but they were only meant for a specific period and specific people, whereas the final religion under the title of Islam, is meant for entire humaity and is not bound to any specific time or nation. All mankind is supposed to follow Muhammad and the Islam sent via him.

For those who doubt this should study their religious scriptures; he has been mentioned in Hindu as well as all scriptures of other religions.

I will try to write an article on that, if God wills, for the convenience of everyone.

Agreed, but no where in ISLAM, it is written that you should kill innocent human beings, just for revenge and naming it as an act of martrydom! Do you think, ISLAM would in any measure, approve of the 16 blasts in Ahmedabad or in the 9-11 attacks in America?

Secondly, every religion has only good things to teac. Its only a perso’s perception of how he or she takes the teachings! It would have been more appreciable if you would have given only the positive aspects of Islam as a religion, instead of comparing it with other religions! Lets for one moment, stop comparing GODS and try to take only good things from every religion (positive criticism)

You are so right Megha and you have all the right to say so since this is how it seems. But the fact is that there is no such thing as ”terrorism” is Islam and no where does it preach so. If Muslims anywhere kill any innocent people, they are not following Islam and are black sheep of our community, just there are black sheep in every community.

Secondly, 9/11 controversy is not PROVED. There is no eveidence to it and is based upon DOUBT alone. Infact a part of Americans now themselves beleive that US itself was behind it!

Still Allah knows the best...

Thirdy, you are right that religion teaches GOOD things and i have mentioned that throughout the article. But as youy can see, the focus of the article has been ’how to do’ and not what to do. I would love to hear any system that has been provided in any religion as how to acheive social and individual peace...please do share your knowledge as i do not know if hinduism or christainity have a practical social or individual system like that i have mentioned regarding Islam.

Finally my dear, I have not campared any Gods since there is only ONE GOD! Your blood is red and so is mine. You have two eyes and one heart and brain and so do i. So our creator is ONE. Comparision is required here since we are talking about a universal solution for mankind. We need to adhere to any philosohy, any faith that can put an end to this chaos we have in this world today. We should be open to it Megha... i am open to hear from anyone any solution, any faith or philosophy which can put an end to this misery and crime in our world. If anyone objects to what Islam has to say, he should also prescribe an alternative solution. I would adhere to it if it is better and more result oreiented than Islam :)

Islam may be the best religion for its followers. But it is not. No one has seen GOD, not even the prophet. Producing a religious book as evidence of the existance of GOD is a belief of faith and has been carried on through Christianity. Jesus Christ is the son of God and not god himself. Gods in Hinduism are incarnations of god and were born as human beings. They are reverred due to their super human qualities.

Islam is not the perfect religion. Increasing numerical strength through fear, scare, misinterepretation or misrepresentation, etc. is like collection of mob; which even Hitler did to justify his actions.

Islam does not teach peace for non-believers. It is peaceful, bountiful and showers all materialistic pleasure to its believers ONLY. It prescribes hell for every one else.

Islam is not clear on the basic concepts. It does not accept difference of opinion. It does not tolerate any other intrepretation. It shuns all forms of art, acting, music and throttles culture. It does not accept Salman Rushdie’s writing. It can destroy even a Bahmiyan statue of stone. Due to lack of clarity even a small time Maulavi issues Fatwa.

If only Allah is to be worshipped and no one else, why Muslim heads bow at the Dargah of Ajmer, Rajasthan or Haji Ali or thousands of such shrines?

Why do Muslims accept subsidy for their Haj piligrimage. It is because, it is permissible to enjoy other’s money by way of collections through Jazia.

I can go on and on and can quote verses from the Holy Quaran to support my contention but it would fall on deaf ears.

The basic question which all Muslims across the globe have to answer is; if Islam teaches peace; why terrorists killing innocent lives are Muslims?

The answer is : Islam does not teach peaceful co-existance with people of other religious beliefs. If I am wrong, let them quote a single verse from their holy book.

Agreed to all of your points. But my only concern is that what is there in ISLAM, which is often used by these terrorist groups as a scape goat or an excuse to spread terrorism? How come these terrorist groups use the teachings to ISLAM as a perfect way of presenting their heinous crimes as an act of justice? The same goes for hinduism also! There are some so-called pro-hindu groups which make use of hinduism as a shield for hiding their barbaric acts! I guess the solution needs to be found out by us only! The common man! Ater all, the sufferer of these acts happen to be the common man only, who in most cases is not at all concerned with these debates.

Secondly, I dont agree with Ramesh, when he points fingers at ISLAM. Because, no religion in the world teaches non-violence! Its only a person’sperceptions of the teachings! Killing and murdering someone can never be a teaching of any religion or GOD!

Thanks Megha for your openmindedness and for bring about this subject that what is there in Islam which allows Muslims to misuse it.

Well, in islam there is a concept of jihad. Jihad mean to ”strive” wheras most people misinterpret it as ”fight”! This is sheer lack of knowledge. Jihad means to strive in the cause of truth or Haq and it can be in various forms like jihad with your money, jihad by writing etc. The last from is fighting when you have no choice and your religion is in danger or attacked by the enemy unduly. But even in this case, Our Prophet taught to work with peace and see if it can be settled without bloodshed. The last option is to fight if there is no way out. It is just like that someone would try to kill our child and you ought to fight with him to save your kid. In Islam we are ordered to fight if our faith is in danger and there is no other way to save it. Just like i have heard that in Maha Bharat, your prophets fight for the cause of truth. So thats a part of all religions.

Now what is happening today is an amalgamation of flasehood and righteousness. If any Muslim misuses this concept he is indeed wrong and Allah would discard his efforts. You are right many Mulsims are doing this with political or some negative motives behind it. But consider, if God forbid, someone would take over India or force you out of your house, what would you do? You would fight ofcourse. This is true in Afghanistan’s case. If they fight for their right, it is justified but if they kill innoccent people this is wrong.

(However, i personally believe that this all is too messed up for us to know what the truth is as it is highly politicized.)

The interesting thing is that in Islam the highest form of jihad is ”jihad with ones’ self” since all evil stems from there. It is unfortunate how most Muslims do not know this and are not interested in following it. I guess most of us have found it in our mothers’ lap that is why we cant value it. Those who study Islam and then convert, i think are doing justice to it. Such Muslims are mostly in America and Europe. They are true Muslims since they follow Prophet Muhammad step by step.

As per Fariha, only few converted true mulsims who only follow step by step the guidance of Prophet Muhammad.

How much is the percentage of those people? must be less than 1%. So as per her 99% Muslims do not follow the guidance of Prophet Muhammad.

Then what is the result of all this, what we are seeing in todays world ?

The religion should be such which can be followed by majority of people in the world.

There should be large number of people who follow it step by step and should attain the objective of uniting with HIM .

Brother Thanks a bunch for opening up so many facets to it. Your long list of objections and questions call for me to answer with a long list of replies:)

1. First of all, Hindus need to clear the concept of God in thier own religion. I will quote some verse from your scriptures here which tell about Oneness of God and that nothing can manifest Him, which is identical to what Islam believes:

Ekam evadvitiyam”
”He is One only without a second.”
[Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1]1

”Na casya kascij janita na cadhipah.”
”Of Him there are neither parents nor lord.”
[Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9]2

”Na tasya pratima asti”
”There is no likeness of Him.”
[Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19]3

”Na samdrse tisthati rupam asya, na caksusa pasyati kas canainam.”

”His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye.”
[Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:20]4

”na tasya pratima asti
”There is no image of Him.”
[Yajurveda 32:3]5

”shudhama poapvidham”
”He is bodyless and pure.”
[Yajurveda 40:8]6

”Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste”
”They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements” (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). ”They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti.”
[Yajurveda 40:9]7

Na tasya Pratima asti”
”There is no image of Him.”
[Yajurveda 32:3]

Brother, although my discussion was not on the concept of God in Islam or Hindusim, but the solution for mankind, but as you have mentioned it i elaborated it. If the quoted verses are true, God cannot be incarnated in any form to begin with. Most Hindus believe so whereas there scriptures say something else. (However, my subject is still not this.)

2. Islam never forces anyone to follow it dear. If it were so then all the Hindus in India would have been Muslims since Muslims ruled India for a thousand years and could force then to follow Islam. Quran clearly states that ”There is no complusion in religion”. (Unlike HITLER!) So your knoweldege is scanty on that.

3. Islam is very clear on its each and every concept and here are claer rights on non-beleivers in it. Quran mentions of Prophet Muhammad as ”A Mercy for all Mankind” and not for the Muslims alone.
Islam allow art and music but it doesnot permit brazenness ans shameless deeds.

4. For those who prostrate at shrines is their own choice; Islam does not tell this. You cannot blame Islam if some followers do something which it does not allow.

5. I dont know here you learnt that Muslims collect subsidry for Haj... in fact Haj or Pilgrimage is the last obligation that one may follow if he has the resources, otherwise there is no complusion.

6. Please quote from Quran whatever you feel like. I will love to hear.

7. Finally, if any Muslim kills innocent people of any religion he is indeed not following islam since Quran prohibits it and says ”He who kills a single person kills all of mankind, he who saves a single life, saves all mankind.” Islam respects the lives of its followers and non-beleivers likewise. This verse proves so and I have quoted it on your insistence my dear brother.

Terrorism is not Muslim monoploy and there is no place of Islam for this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-fNo8cDCt8

However, you put up many objections but did not tell about a single substitute law and system from your or any faith that could help mankind on individual and social level.

Brother all religions are infact one. We all, including the Muslims, need to study their scriptures and learn the truth and not merely go with what the maulvis or pandits say. Howver, Islam is the final solution and this thing and Prophet Muhammad has been mentioned in your scripture... he is the final avtar and by following what he brought can humanity be saved from this plight. May God help us to see the truth!

I don’t want to sound anti islam or hindu chauvinist (I am hardly religious)...but you need to read some neutral, unbiased history...

Forced conversion and atrocities were rampant in the past, especially during the times of the likes of Aurangzeb. But it’s not easy to convert the whole nation. So your logic doesn’t hold good.
Don’t let your reasoning get blinded by religion.
1 Stars
I just don’t want to stretch these points but a huge list can be compiled of destruction, loots and atrocities by the muslim invaders. If its own disciples don’t follow the principles what’s the point of preaching others?
1 Stars
Most of what you said have already been contradicted by yourself and also by other readers.

I am not a scholar of religion. But I know that Hinduism is not a religion as understood by people of other faiths. At most, its a way of life. Hindus worship God in image (saakar) form and also imageless (Nirakar). One can remain a true Hindu without following or agreeing to anything written in its scriptures or said by its scholars. Its a matter of individual choice to connect himself or herself with his creator in the manner one chosses.

Islam is not the last religion. The latest and most recent is Sikhism. If Gandhiji, Saerojini Naidu, George Bernard Shaw and others were so impressed, did they abandon their own religion and embraced Islam?

Your suggestions are your own, which can be debated, agreed to or rejected on merits without bringing in the color of the religion; is what I intended to say when I commented on your blog.

Fariha, writing some quotes here does not mean that you have read and understood all the scriptures and epics of the world. How can you judge that Islam is the best of all. Evaluation and judgement is the part of a person who has read and understood all. But I don’t think you have that broad knowledge and capability. In that case you might have compared and cited good morals from other religions too. You are just one of those strict muslims, who want to spread their religion wider and wider.

Every religion has similar attributes but the problem is that no single person (leader) seems to exhibit, as to how the society can follow the principles of the particular religion.

All most all leaders are using religion for different motives rather then the main objective of uniting with The LORD!!

There is need to have a leader who can work on that line only and rest all are taken care automatically.

True Dr. Ratan.

We already have a leader named Muhammad (may peace be upon him).

George Bernard Shaw, a famous writer and non-Muslim says:

”He must be called the Savior of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it much needed peace and happiness.”
(The Genuine Islam, Singapore, Vol. 1, No. 8, 1936)

K. S. Ramakrishna Rao, an Indian (Hindu) professor of Philosophy, in his booklet ”Muhammad the Prophet of Islam” calls him the ”perfect model for human life.” Professor Ramakrishna Rao explains his point by saying:

”The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes. There is Muhammad the Prophet. There is Muhammad the Warrior; Muhammad the Businessman; Muhammad the Statesman; Muhammad the Orator; Muhammad the Reformer; Muhammad the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad the Judge; Muhammad the Saint. All in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is alike a hero.”

Sarojini Naidu says:

”It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for, in the mosque, when the call for prayer is sounded and worshippers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and king kneel side by side and proclaim: ’God Alone is Great’... I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes man instinctively a brother.”

Professor Hurgronje:

”The league of nations founded by the prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity and human brotherhood on such universal foundations as to show candle to other nations.” He continues, ”the fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations.”

Edward Gibbon and Simon Ockley:

”I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, AND Muhammad, AN APOSTLE OF GOD’ is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honor of the Prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtues; and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion.”
(History of the Saracen Empires, London, 1870, p. 54)

”Mahatma Gandhi”, speaking on the character of Muhammad, in ’YOUNG INDIA’ states:

”I wanted to know the best of one who holds today undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind... I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life.”

Dr. Ratan, your and my opinion and thoughts can be questionable, but not of great people like Gandi and the well read Christains scholars!

Dr. Ratan please do tell us which faith that is and the details of it on individual as well as sicial level.

Yes, indeed very few people are following Prophet Muhammad 100%. The reason is not because what he did was HARD or not pratical for common man, but the general degeneration of the moral and character of the people in the age we are born in. This is the end of times and times near Day of Judgment.. this moral collapse is a sign of that.

You are right, the objective of attaining HIm is the supreme cause of Islam as well. And for that Islam tells you to be with people, take care of all relationships and take care of the society. We cant say we want to unite with HIM and ignore the society. God has set this stage for people to perform, realize HIs greatness and return to HIM in the end. Merely by saying that the attaining Him is our sole aim, we cant leave the social element out. For this reason, Islam has given personal worships of attaining Him as well as social laws to give a COMPLETE system to His best creation.

One has to live in this society and do all the tasks to fulfill the responsibility of family. But, one has also to work towards the main objective : the objective of attaining HIM.

Have we got any social setup where such balanced life is exhibited ?

Yes Dr. Ratan. Saudi Arabia and Iran are two such examples where Islamic laws are implemented. I have been to Saudi Arabia and you wont believe but most shopkeepers do not lock up their shops and go for prayers; they are so sure that no one will rob them!

These countries have lowest crime rates and people are peaceful on individual as well as social level. They work, play and get married. In Iran too, women participate in all walks of life and observe hijab as well.

In Islam, attaining God is woven with serving humanity. The ultimate standard mentioned in the Quran is ”Say (O Mohammed) ”If you do love God,. follow me,. God will love you, ...”

One is to follow Muhammad as much as possible for him and he will attain God. He needs to fulfill all obligations including social as well as personal worship.

God remains ”the Objective” when we keep good relations with our family, take care of our wife or children, visit the sick, take care of the neighbour, feed the hungry or earn an honest living or go to the mosque or meditate in seclusion.

Over reliance of religion can create several problems which is seen in conservative countries. Religion should remain at a personal level if you need at all...

For once I can’t agree with the concept of wearing hijab to prevent rape. It is an against any sense of personal freedom and democracy. Such a system basically means all people are inherently wicked and so they need to be veiled.

Jitaditya, if religion is not a solution, then can you please share what is?

The concept of hijab is not wearing a piece of cloth on your head alone. It is as i have explained in the article already. Human beings are not inherently wicked but are weak and prone to evil easily.

If we keep these laws of God on personal level and choice alone, things can never improve.

As I have said...the solution is having common sense which is lacked by most of the common populace...
If you see how religions have evolved...they began as ways to address peoples insecurities as they din’t know why the sun used to set....

But having come thus far, it is now appropriate for the human beings to look at things more logically and not be swayed away by emotions. What you think as the gods law might not be considered so by someone else...and so it’s better to keep things at a personal level.

I respect your opinion Jitadiya, but by saying so you are not only denying others prophets and books but your own as well. This is the problem with most of the modern young crowd that they treat religion, any religion as ”dud”!

Zakir is no source for any Muslim But Quran and the words of Prophet Muhammad is. Plus it is not the Mulsims alone who are not following their religion 100%... christains and Hindus too do not follow their faith 100%... this is general degeneration of morals.

My intention is not to preach Islam here but only to present a solution for mankind as has been laid down by Islam. The surprising thing is that those who criticize it are not even presenting any alternate soultion!

1. Who said that these places have greatest number of crime? What about rampant honor killings in Pakistan (happens in India also) or daily suicide bombings in Iraq or Afghanistan? In some countries all the crimes are not well documented or recorded.

2. God’s law? All the religious books are also written by some other human being. No one has seen ”god” and religion is just a result of our insecurity complex.

Dear, no one can show light to someone if Allah does not want to show light to him.

If you would, Prophet Muhammad was an unlettered man. Quran is the word of God not his.

You are free to believe whatever on personal elvel, but do share with me if you find a solution better than what we have been discussing so far for the mankind or society.
1 Stars
Do you really think you have given some unique solution? These things appear in every religious/social book....but islam tries to achieve them with undemocratic means like restricting such basic preferences as what to wear!
I have given my solution already but it would be difficult for you to believe.

Also you did not clarify your comment on ”number of crimes” in various societies.
I sincerely believe sexual crimes are more in oppressive societies in the third world if we take all of them into account(most of them don’t get to media)

A very nice article Fariha... here are my thoughts on it.

Islam is a great religion, and it has given the world many great men, but every religion is great and has contributed massively to the world. All religions have a code of conduct and law, Europe worked on Christian law for a long time, Hindu countries followed the Hindu law (Manusmriti), and other countries followed the laws as per the dominant religion.

Poverty: The concept of Charity in Islam is great, but it does occur in other religions as well. Hinduism and Christianity both have guidelines for charity, much like Islam.

Robbery: Yes, I am against the punishment of chopping off hands of a thief. As you say, it is brutal. Religions have to keep pace with times, it was fine in practise according to the times when this law came to the fore, but in this age it simply is brutal. Also, there’s something called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Rape: I can agree with you on that point.

The assertion that Islam is the only solution for mankind is incorrect. It is One of the solutions. I consider every religion to be a solution, and if you ask an atheist, you’ll hear something on the lines of ”Religion is the Opium of the Masses”.

Your comment here shows what many great people think of Islam. And I agree with every word there. But did you notice that not one of them converted to Islam? Why? Because every religion is as great as the other, and all of them followed great religion(s).

Your comment on Hinduism here is a collection of entries taken out of context. Hinduism clearly states that there is one formless, shapeless, endless God and the other deities are mere forms of the Supreme Being. I believe you’ve heard of the movie Fitna. What was it? A collection of verses shown totally out of context. And if you’ve seen it, you’ll agree that someone could actually believe those things to be true, simply because the context was wrong.

Every Religion in this world is an answer to all problems that plague the world. Follow any religion you prefer, or be an atheist, but always respect other religions, their thoughts, their expressions, their beliefs.

In addition, Hinduism talks about a life after death! The heaven and the hell concept. Its written in our scriptures that a person has to pay for hus deeds or misdeeds in front of GOD after his or her death. Another concept of Hinduism is that a person who does good to other gets good returns while a person who commits bad deeds gets nothing but the worst in his life.

Bernard Shaw, the grear writer supported Hinduism as according to him the best thing about Hinduism si that it writes about Re-birth. The concept of Re-birth in hiduism is also based on the concept of good deeds and bad deeds.

hinduism is a religion, which says that a person surely gets punished for his deeds here only! and that too by the Supreme power!

Fariha, the only reason I asked that question earlier was because it was tough to believe that a person as intelligent as you would believe that charity and tackling crime could be exclusive to a certain religion. Poverty and crime have existed ever since civilization was born, and it is very obvious that every organized religion would seek to tackle these issues. This link will tell you what major world religions have to say on charity and poverty. You can have a look at that site to find more parallels in religions, and what religions have to say on specific topics.

Hats Off to you FARIHA madam!

Thanks for this engaging piece.

I hope write ups like these will be able to remove some unfortuante misconceptions people have worldwide regarding Islam- the most Scientific and dynamic religion of all, empowered to encompass all within its common arena.

I sincerely wish that people, stop judging Islam based on the begulling blasphemous writings of some ”writers” and the heinous activities of some ”fundamentalists”.

Why judge a religion from the activity of people, humans who are fallible?

Why not make your own ”informed” decision regarding Islam or any other faith for the matter?

Gandhiji was a Hindu! But so was Nathuram Godse.

So will you say that Hinduism permits violence or rather encourages it??

Or would you not like to maintain that Hinduism preaches the tenets of Ahimsa!

Would you then judge Hinduism on the yardsick of human follies, or would you choose it to reflect upon what it has imparted to your human faculties???

Be INFORMED! Be aware! Dont be guided by some who have ulterior motives which has nothing to do with religion!

First enlighten yourself ragarding the essence of Islam!

And still if you are not satisfied, then GOD have mercy on you!!!

2. As I have said, most of the crimes are not recorded in backward countries. Numbers will be more out there. In fact rape and honour killing is not even punished in certain societies and women are treated as slaves.
3. Democracy and individual freedom should be the basis of any modern society rather than any religion.

History suggests that the most intolerant of religions had been Christianity and Islam. Christianity reformed itself and apart from small pockets of radicalism like the Holy See, it has come a long, long way in the path of civilisation. Islam then took over where radical Christianity left. Forced conversions and persecution of religious minorities in the Islamic world started centuries back. Now the world is threatened by the likes of Osama bin Laden to form a pan world Islamic caliphate.

There indeed wont be poverty if every person donates 2.5% of his income...but then can u give me reason why are there sky-high economic differences among 80 Muslim nations of the world like Somalia, B’desh, etc. on one side and Saudi, Iran, etc on other side...if Muslims could achieve atleast one level of prosperity amongst themselves world will definately think of ur ’Islamic’ solution to end the crisis atleast in this regard and honor this Islamic practice!

@ Fariha:

There is no doubt within the Hindus about the concept of God. Hindu's believe there is only one God and God has countless forms and each form is worshipable. Not necessarily in just one form or the lack of form.

Now tell me what do you think when you think about Allah? If you say you draw a blank because there is no form of God then you might just be thinking about almost anything on earth including Peter North's prodigious manhood. Don't mind this, but to worship God you must have a form and Hinduism provides for this. This is the reason why people like you find it so hard to grasp the complexities that lies in utter simplicity of Hinduism.

Byzantine Christian emperor Manuel II Palaiologos said;
Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

This is what another radical (this time a Christian one) Pope Benedict XVI quoted in a theological discourse causing furore.

Okay, one radical should not say such things to another. After all, people who live on glass houses shouldn't throw stones at others'. But Christianity has undergone tremendous reforms. And what Manuel II Palaeologus said was not entirely wrong. The Islamic society should take measures to reform themselves.

I shall not discuss with you anything here except to quote the great Mahatma Gandhi here:

And unlike you, we ”evil” Muslims believe in ”your Christ” and if anyone disrespects him, he is as great a sinner to us as the one who disrespects Muhammad!!!

THIS IS OUR ISLAM!!!

Muhammad preached everything evil and the religion of Islam is nothing but pure Satanic. Where in any other religion do you have the 'divine' sanction of stonings and amputations that is still practiced in the 21st century?

Islam and its practices brings about a sense of revulsion in the civilized world. The quicker you know it the better for you. This is the Devil's own order and Muhammad is the Devil's own messenger.

There is no comparison between Hinduism and Islam. Hinduism has countless sects and sub-sects. Islam by nature is a fascist type of an entity that some people consider as religion where strict discipline is maintained at the crack of a whip. It doesn't have any room for variants like Sunnis in Pakistan do not consider Shiites or Ahmadiyyas as Muslims.

Islam is just plain fascism in the name of a religion that breeds radical terrorists.

When the christain terrorists kill people, take their land by force and call it the ”war against terror” it is justified! And when the same people react to it, they are ”Muslim terrorist”... how fair and modern outlook on terrorism!

Afghanistan war was based on DOUBT that Osama has been behind 9/11. Now is it justified to impose ”war” on a whole nation even if one man, or a few men did something wrong? They could have caught them and punished them but they destroyed the entire nation and still Osama is no where!

The greatest terrorism is done by American polititians not Muslims!

Its rare to find people of such articualtion now-a-days. In sophisticated language, I may say, you are a capable diplomat and a lovable person.

Thank you Ramesh; this is indeed your generosity.... Once a person came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and said all bad things to him. He replied, ” you are true.” Then another came and said all good things about him. He replied ” you are true”. His companions asked him the reason for both the replies and he said ” I am like a mirror; every person percieves of me the way he is himself.”

I dont intend to equate myself with him (Godforbid), but i feel we think of others the way we are. If we find faults with people, they are within our ownselves and if we think people are good, it is our own inner beauty.

Your appreciation is your own beauty.

All praise is for HIM and due to HIM. God bless u:)

Fariha, of course Islam doesn’t preach terrorism, no religion does that! Not even Satanism. The Satanic Bible doesn’t say ”kill thy neighbour, rape thy sister..etc”.

But it does appear very selfish to say that all the problems of the world can be resolved by following a certain religion. The basic tenets of Islam are the same as Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Satanism..and all the other well-known and little known religions.

It would be dumb for me to ask you to convert to Hinduism because I believe in it. Or, for that matter, to ask an atheist to believe in any God. Our problems can only be solved by logical thinking; leaving emotional concepts like religion out of it.

Jaya dear, i never asked anyone here to accept Islam, did i?

I respect your opinion and pray that our world finds peace by some way, logic, reason , faith or whatever.

Our quest to me is a solution and not relgion...

@Fariha I got disturbed by all the religion-bashing being done here. For me, the religious boundaries don’t exist, so there is no question of conversion.

I love that you say ”our world”. That’s all that matters, right? :)

@ Jayashree. Yes indeed yar!

I am sorry if you got the inpression of a religious war here...lol... but my intention was to find a solution for us, not a religion. And what seemed the best to me according to my experience and knowledge thats what i expressed.

No one has copyrights of the world or God for that matter; the world and HE are as much mine as yours....

I feel at least all of us should strive for truth and know the purpose of creation.....for our own good if not for the good for world at large.
