Quick question though:

Is a right really a right unless you’re allowed to practice it in real life??

And exactly how many of these ”rights” are actually allowed to women in supposedly Islamic countries like say Afghanistan????

Good article, Fariha.
But I think there is immense scope of misinterpretations in Islam. Why else would woman be confined in many muslim sects and society? These protective laws also become weapons of oppression.
I had a neighbour in Bangalore. This newly married muslim girl was not allowed to listen to music or enjoy any form of entertainment. Not allowed to step out. Not allowed to read magazines. Not allowed to stand in the balconey of her own flat. She couldn’t open the door without hijab to collect even courier.

Fariha May Allah grant you paradise for your great effort to highlight what non-muslims have failed to understand - The Hijab.

See, what has always unimpressed me is the fact that much as the non-muslim world looks at Hijab with negativity, they seem to have forgoten their own religious history as in regard to physical aspects.

So please Fariha, allow me add on this, that…even men actually do veil and the Nuns veils as requested in Christianity. Interestingly, it’s even recorded that as early as 13BC that NOBLE WOMEN (Throughout Europe) used to veil to cover their beauty from piercing eyes of the common men.
In fact the early Victorians used to veil and today, the British queen is famous for her beautiful hats and gloves.
Due to it’s significance, the Hijab become mandatory for all-God fearing Muslim Women to cover their modesty from Men’s lust. But again, like Fariha said, it’s really a matter of logic to know what is good and bad. On the other hand if a woman decides not to veil, she won’t be looking very noble. It’s her who misses out.

Does the Hijab make a woman less beautiful?
Put it blindly in this way, women are very particular about their appearance. We all know that hair is the woman’s crown. Even the celebrated Shakespeare spoke about of women and men too often.

And why do women need to wear a hijab?
1) The veil is just a fashion statement
2) The snow cap like covers and holds the hair do in place
3) There are many designs to match the fashion.
Did you know the hijab does not actually include a veil to cover the face? No?
“Cover the Modesty from the Navel to the Knee for Men and EVERYTHING except the Face and the Feet for woman”. I’m not very sure if it’s the Quran or Sunnah Rasul, but it’s what it has been commanded.

Now how about this..?
A woman driving a convertible, wind blowing nicely…. hair goes frizzy… end of the trip! Now, a trip to the salon is required and the candidate looks very very very cheap.
Come Next Contestant: Woman with a hijab. Nothing flies out. Arrives all intact. Dignity upheld-agreed!

You see Fariha, I am a Muslim man. In contrast to the modern men, Men are still men, from the Jahil Times of Pre-Christ times, they still like barbarians. We men still like to look women over so much. We like to see the shape of the women and the contours. However, with a hijab, though physically, a woman may not look appealing…but the mind of the men is always trying to find out the jewel within the sand dunes.
With a limited view of just the face, the blemishes of the woman is easily hidden, like any scarring, discoloration or pigmentation and a terrible hairdo.

Plus, something that women don’t know is that the slight body odour emitted while wearing a Hijab. That is like the “pick me up” scent asking the men to come after the lady. Mainly, no woman should be displaying her little secrets unless she is with her partner. And technically, whiter, clearer skin can be obtained easily when the body is less exposed to the elements. So thus in essence, the collagen is concentrated more to just the face, not just the whole body.

Just look at the Malaysian and Saudi Women, they have so much designs for the Muslimah. It’s a debatable question though!
If you dispute what I’m saying! Better hit back!,

Aslam Alkm my sister.
Thanks so much.
True, the Hijab shall always remain a sign of nobility to all women be they Muslim or not.
I have always argued that the non-muslim world must open up to the realities of Islam and Muslims.
We Muslims have given our weomen alot of dignity while high levels of rape and divorce in the western world are for the western women.
Islam is something that you cannot avoid because it is natural and its teachings are as powerful as the souls can observe.
For the Muslim women, have no worry. Just obey Allah’s commands. And for the men, please, please, our Muslim sisters are the best we can ever have so treat them with all the humility and respect they deserve.
Or...we muslim men have forgoten that these women are the ones that carry us in their wombs. May Allah bless the woman.

Very good Article Fariha.

I’ve always wondered how people seem to look down upon Muslim women wearing hijab. Meanwhile in every Christian painting of Mary (peace be upon her) shows her covering her hair and generally modest.

However, we must also keep in mind that Muslims are also to blame for some of the bad publicity of the hijab... Oppression of Muslim women in some Muslim countries is no joke and the equality of those women in society is undermined.

We need to make non-muslims understand sometimes that Islam needs to be seen from it’s principles and goals, not from what Muslims are doing.
